Detection of Direct Sun Glare on Drivers from Point Clouds

Sunlight conditions can reduce drivers’ visibility, which is a safety concern on road networks. This research introduces method to study sun glare incidence in environments. Sun areas during daylight hours are automatically detected from mobile laser scanning (MLS) and aerial (ALS) point clouds. The comprises the following steps. First, Sun’s position (solar altitude azimuth) referring location calculated. Second, of with user’s angle vision analyzed based human vision. Third, ray intersections near obstacles (vegetation, building, etc.) calculated utilizing MLS Finally, distant (mountains) ALS data processed order combine both types, remove outliers, optimize computational time for intersection searches (point density reduction Delaunay triangulation). was tested two real case studies, covering roads different bearings, slopes, surroundings. combination data, together solar geometry, identify risk visibility drivers. Consequently, proposed be utilized glare, implementing warnings navigation systems.
